Independent Research Entry

My Independent Research Entry is about one of my favorite and best DJ of all times, Tiesto. Born in Holland in 1969, when he was 35 he and a close friend founded Black Hole Recordings and started producing music. Later on he produced various hits like "Suburban Train", "Adagio for Strings" and many others. By 2002 he was declared the number one Dj on the "DJ Magazine".  He made the Electronic/Trance Music what is now and on the live part he was filling stadiums and big arenas. In 2004 he was the first DJ to perform at the Olympics and was the first DJ to perform to 3.8 billions of people. 

Tiesto is one of the most recognizable DJ around the world and still will be for a few more years. Not only by his style of producing music but how he made everyone dance and spread the Electronic Music around the world. Himself is a big innovation to the Electronic Music because; he made the Electronic Music go to where no one has ever got. Now days Tiesto is revolutionizing the way of producing his music and now he is using more Electronic sounds and left the Trance behind. Still he gives the Trance touch to his tracks but now he is producing what the people want to hear and he still is filling up his concerts. 

Tiesto did a lot of innovations to the Electronic music and opened multiple doors to new DJ's and to new producers. One of his main reason and inspiration was that he wants to spread his music to everywhere and I'm more than sure that he accomplished it and not only myself know it but you can see it in the numbers and how to whenever he goes he will fill up the stadium or arena and people will go crazy. He made the Electronic music go more Dance and made it so that people can dance it in clubs. 

I would like to say that Tijs Michiel Verwest "Tiesto" was a very big inspiration for me when I decided to study Recording Arts. Every time I watch one of his concerts it just makes me feel the music and get more pumped to produce and to work with it. As an industry professional when I listen to his music and sit down and analyze it so that later on I can get the sounds to sound like his. It opens my ears for some new sound ideas and for some motivation too.

Electronic Music Innovations

Lets talk about one of the biggest DJ's/Producers in the Electronic music. This band composed by Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo and Thomas Bangalter both together are Daft Punk. Daft Punk is still and will be the innovation of Electronic music. They made an evolution on what is called Electronic music and completely turn it into what now days is called Electronic music. What these guys were producing is and still will be what now days everyone calls Electronic. 

Lets talk about how they started, and it all began with "Da Funk" after this album since it was commercial it placed their picture on the streets and people were wondering about them. This album got the attention of the Record companies and got them a contract. Then in 1999 they released the album "Discovery" this album got many awards and a few songs made the top chart. How they were creating the sounds is how people got impressed and because how they sounded like is what made them who they are. 

How they sound, is what everyone likes and is how Electronic music revolutionized. I can call them the future Karftwerk cause they try to be like robots sometimes and the sounds that they get are a little bit compared. One of their innovations was how commercial they got with their songs so it made Electronic music go around the world. 

For me Daft Punk as an industry professional made me think how they got the sounds and how they sounded great and gave me more points of view to see and analyze the music. As a listener they made me get involved with the Electronic music more and it opened a new genre in my playlist.  

Electronic Music Entry

Kraftwerk were the innovation of music. The music that they were producing was called Electronic and it all begins with them. Kraftwerk were a band of 4 artists but there were two main producers Florian and Ralf. Their music was produced but synthesizers and different instruments build up by themselves. This music was the new fashion but it wasn't a dance.

Kraftwerk released various albums during their entire career. It all started with "Auto-Bahn" that was their first album that lifts their career; they delete from their files the other two albums before this one. "Auto-Bahn" was a big success and made them famous. After this album they produced a few more records until they produced "Trans-Euro Express" that brought Kraftwerk back to the radio but it was a flop because it wasn't a Dance album. They started listening to what people like to hear on the clubs and produced "Das Model", this album made Kraftwerk back to the radio and to the dance floor. 

Two big influences that Kraftwerk did to the Electronic music were: the instruments that they used, that were built by themselves, and how they produced their albums. They took a lot of influence from other producers to complete their albums and that help them to win the emotion of the crowd. Another good thing about Kraftwerk is that the lyrics that they did were changed into all the languages that they wanted to and it still sounded great, that gave them more versatility. 

I'm a big fan of Electronic music and now I'm more into the new stuff. But I really was interested in how it all started and when I saw the documentary and how they produced the music it made me think how great it was, comparing that now is all plug-ings.

What’s Going On Entry

Marvin Gaye music was more a Motown singer, but in this song he went more Soul. His image in the music industry was well known and he was a great producer. He played various instruments and was a really good octave singer. 

In the song "What's Going On" he talked about all the suffer that the people were having in the war and what consequences they had after going to the war. This song made a lot of people to think and changed a lot of minds.

Marvin had various obstacles trying to release the album "What's Going On" after he recorded the album Berry Gordy the CEO of Motown wouldn't let him release the album. Everyone in the company tried to conviense Gordy but he didn't wanted. Marvin said that he wouldn't produce any more music until his album was released. Anyway he underground without letting Berry know released the album and sold 100 thousand in the first day. Berry Gordy didn't complain about that. 

The lyrical theme of this album made a lot of people to think because it was really strong talking about the Vietnam War and how people suffer. In the music side he used a lot of of classic and jazz arrangements.

This album didn't made that big of an influence on me because it is not my style of music, but I made me think about what was happening during the Vietnam War and all the suffering that happened during that age. 

Velvet Underground & Nico Entry

The Velvet Underground was an American rock band. When they release their first album, they were an innovation comparing to what everyone was used to listen. Compared to the Beach Boys and The Beatles these guys were more a rock style band.

Lou Reed was the guitarist and vocalist of the band. After the split up of the band he continued his career as a solo artist. His career as a solo artist went pretty well, and he produced various albums like his latest "Walk on the Wild Side: The Best of Lou Reed" was one of his best in his solo career. Another Band member John Cale, was the Viola/Producer of The Velvet Underground. He is my favorite artist of this band, he played classic music too. John Cale played various instruments during and did the backing vocals of a few songs.

Andy Warhol, great manager and artist. His roll in the band was the manager, he helped the band to get were they got. He design the cover of one of their album's. He got the band the contract with MGM's Verve Records, and promote them through their entire career. He was a big influence in the band and help them to make them as big as they were.

One of the big things that made the album The Velvet Underground & Nico different from all the other records and so especial, was the lyrics. What they talked about in the songs where different of what everyone was used to, the beach and surfing. Another influence that made that album what it was, is the instruments that they used.

The influence that The Velvet Underground made on me, wasn't that much. But they showed me how the rock started and how the combination. I really appreciate the music that they did because it started a new movement of rock.

Revolver Entry

The Beatles before the album "Revolver" was already big and famous around the world. But this album reached and blew everyone expectations and still happening. Before this album The Beatles were producing more rock pop style music. With this album they went more psychedelic and used some crazy sounds and effects on the album.

The Beatles used different influence while producing this album and one of their biggest was the LSD that is why this album is very psychedelic, not only on the music aspect but in the lyrics too. The Beatles used their studio as an instrument while producing this album. This creates an effect and a cool reverb that gave that feel while they recorded the songs.

In the album "Revolver" The Beatles innovate some sounds effects and new feels to the tracks. The reverse guitar was one of their new sound effects that they use in multiple tracks of the album and gave that cool psychedelic feel to the song. Apart from these, they processed the lead vocal. They used some pre-recorded loops and they double the vocals to give a new feel that sounded great in The Beatles.

This album as a listener gives me some good impression and made me want to listen the album for the rest of my life. This album is well produced, recorded and mixed. As an industry professional this album serves for me as a big inspiration in many ways and how it was mixed, giving me multiple ideas for when I have the opportunity to do my own.

Pet Sounds Entry

The Beach Boys "Pet Sounds" album was one of the most enjoyable they made. When they made this album they use as an influence their competition The Beatles. Before this album the Beach Boys weren't a huge famous band, but when they released this album it broke the expectation of everyone.

Brian Wilson was the leader/songwriter of The Beach Boys. He had an important role in the band but he covered it well. Brian Wilson had different influence when he wrote this album. He used "The Beatles" as an influence when he wrote the songs of the album "Pet Sounds". Apart from The Beatles, Brian Wilson biggest influence was Phil Spector. With him they made that album sound how it sounded. Phil Spector's wall of sound made "Pet Sounds" one of the most influential pop album ever released.

In this album Brian Wilson used the Electro-Theremin as an instrument and gave a different feeling and that innovating sound that everyone liked. Apart from this, Brian Wilson recorded the songs in different studios because he said that with that he was getting a different feeling for the song. Since The Beach Boys are more like a surfer pop band when I heard this album it reminds me back home "Puerto Rico", because I used to surf and it gave me that beach surfing good times.

From a listener point of view this album was great and made a lot of minds to go and follow their career this album was so great that changed the music history. As an industry professional I would say that this album was their best ever produced, but they leaned and used The Beatles as a big influence while producing this album but probably that is why it made it that good.

I'm Jose Toledo born and raised in Puerto Rico. Moved to Orlando to go to Full Sail University and study Recording Arts. I have being always into the music industry since I was a little kid.
